Writing Series: Lincoln Paine
Join us for a bi-monthly Writing Series at Word After Word Books!
Lincoln Paine returns in January!
If you were in Tahoe last summer, you may have had the opportunity to attend our writing session with Lincoln Paine, author of five books and more than a hundred articles, chapters, reviews, and lectures on maritime history. We had a ton of fun writing with Lincoln, and now we get to do it again!
Lincoln's books include the award-winning The Sea and Civilization: A Maritime History of the World (Knopf, 2013), Down East: A Maritime History of Maine (Tilbury House, 2000), and Ships of the World: An Historical Encyclopedia (Houghton Mifflin, 1997). He has been a volunteer with, and served on the board of, The Telling Room, a nonprofit writing center in Portland, Maine, that focuses on young writers ages 6 to 18.
Wednesday's class will look at writing through the prism of the visual arts, in particular what art historian James Terry refers to as the seven pleasures: abstraction, allegory, expressionism, fantasy, narrative, naturalism, and pattern.
Poetry, drama, fiction, memoir, nonfiction, journalism, letters—even mundane memoranda—embody one or more of these pleasures.
Come try your hand at exercises designed to make your writing—and reading—more pleasurable.
Writing sessions are held in the store every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month (unless otherwise specified), from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and will focus on building writing practice through prompts, writing exercises, and shared readings.
Sessions will incorporate general writing practice with timed prompts and reading out loud (always voluntary), as well as at least one writing exercise every session, varying based on the theme. Themes include character building, description, grammar, word play, short stories, memoir, etc. We'll do something new each week!
We invite special guest authors and writers to lead occasional sessions, so if you know someone who might be interested, of if you would like to lead a session yourself, please contact us at the bookstore!
Sessions are $15 in advance or $20 at walk-in. Want to save money by attending more than one session? Purchase a 4-pack and attend any four sessions of your choice (they do not have to be consecutive) for just $50!
